Shanghai After Dark: A Photographic Journey

Florian W. Mueller's Award-Winning Reportage Art Series, "Nightshift Shanghai"

Driven by a desire to capture the city's genuine face, Mueller ventured into Shanghai's alleys, far removed from the glitz of luxury shopping malls and flagship stores. His exploration led him to small shop owners selling everyday necessities, from groceries and paints to cigarettes and shoes. The resulting images reveal a vibrant, bustling world that thrives under the glow of neon lights.

Technically, Mueller used a Nikon D850 camera with a 24-70mm VR lens to capture the city's nocturnal activities. Post-production was done using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC. The images are available in limited editions, with sizes ranging from 27 x 20cm to 150 x 112cm.

One of the unique aspects of Mueller's project is the interaction with the subjects. He aimed to capture authentic, unposed moments, often shooting unnoticed to avoid disrupting the natural flow of life. After taking the photos, he would introduce himself and explain his project, often being invited for tea or a beer by the locals.

The "Nightshift Shanghai" series required extensive research and careful planning. Mueller spent a total of 11 days in Shanghai, capturing images during late evenings and nights. The post-production process took an additional 10 days. Despite the challenges of working in a foreign city and navigating cultural differences, Mueller succeeded in creating a series that is as illuminating as it is captivating.
